Summary

ALS has provided daily monitoring and engineering support for a client operating multiple wells with ESP systems installed in the Gulf of Thailand since November 2015. The ALS engineer is actively involved on a day-to-day basis, and included in all operational communication and decision-making. The independent guidance and expertise of ALS has proven particularly valuable, since the client has minimal full-time staff with significant ESP experience.

  • Best practice recommendations for equipment designs, installations, commissioning, startups, shutdowns, troubleshooting, and general operations

Project Details

The wells are located in the Gulf of Thailand, and the production rates and water cuts vary across the field, requiring different pumps and equipment designs to optimize production. The oil produced is highly viscous, with a very low gas-oil ratio (GOR). There are multiple well and completion designs, including vertical and horizontal applications, with and without y-tools.

There have been challenges faced with production declines. To attempt to identify and resolve the issues, workovers have been recommended and performed, including cutting tubing, reperforating production intervals, and performing acid jobs, with some success.

Pump performance has been tested via dead head testing or back-flushing the wells with diesel or produced fluid from other wells. It is assumed that the viscous effects or waxy buildups across the pump stages may be degrading pump performance.

In the event of equipment failures, ALS engineers are present at the teardowns to document findings, generate daily reports, and construct a final DIFA report with root cause included, to be presented to the client.
