ALS was requested to conduct a study on different forms of ESP deployments to assess the best option for the field, with a specific focus on evaluating wireline retrievable ESP systems (WRESPs). Along with the evaluation of the various deployment types, a full field feasibility study was requested along with accompanying front end engineering design (FEED) study for ESP, well completion design and platform topsides. The work was split into two phases:
ALS kicked off the project (Phase 1) by reviewing all available subsurface field data and technical documentation/designs from engineering, design and procurement (EPC) companies. Following this review ESP designs and initial recommendations were compiled which allowed the operator to make an informed decision on the viability of WRESPs. Following the initial study a workshop was held with all interested parties, which set the expectations for Phase 2 of the project.
During the second phase of the project the completion philosophy for WRESPs and jointed tubing deployed ESPs was agreed upon. Items evaluated included material handling, crane size, rig up requirements for WRESP as well as ESP power requirements and detailed ESP application design. ALS also conducted a deployment and vendor comparison study of ESP companies under consideration by the operator.
Phase 1 –Initial Field Data Review and Workshop
Phase 2 –FEED Study
ALS involvement in the project has allowed the Operator to make a decision on deployment of WRESPs and to begin the contracting process. It has also provided a full understanding of the requirements for deployment of both WRESP and conventional ESP systems. Finally, by using the ALS economic study the operator was able to clearly see the cost and production benefit of each deployment method.
ALS helped demonstrate WRESPs were suitable for this project and a good option for the field as an ESP deployment method based on the operator’s critical factors. All technical requirements for facilities, deployment and completion design were identified and presented in a final document for the operator allowing them to make critical business decisions. ALS will assist with project execution at a later date as/when requested by the Operator.
